Frequently Asked Questions
- What is NetTunes?
- NetTunes is a service that allows you to store, play, and share your mp3 music files with other users.
- How does it work?
- Using our free player software, you can share and upload your mp3 music files to the NetTunes service. You can then access and download those files from any computer connected to the internet. Others can also download and play those files, and you can access and download files that have been uploaded by other users.
- Is it legal?
- Yes. NetTunes is a mutual fund — of music. When you register with NetTunes, you become a member of this fund and gain access to our music library.
When you decide to share a music file, it is encrypted on your computer. When you upload it to the NetTunes service, it is stored in encrypted form. When you want to play a particular song, the player software checks with the NetTunes service to see if it available to play at that time. If a copy is available, you will be able to play it. If not, the player checks the next song in your playlist, and so on. Whether any particular song is available at any one time is determined by the number of copies of that song that have been shared and how many other users are currently playing it.
- Can I "un-share" my files?
- Yes, you can share or un-share any of your music files at any time. Un-sharing a file decrypts it on your computer and makes one less copy of it available for playing by others.
- What kind of files can I share and upload?
- You can currently share and upload mp3 files only. These files must have at least the title and artist defined in their id3 tags. There is a 20MB limit on the size of each file.
- How much does the service cost?
- The service is free during the beta period. After that time, we will determine how much, if anything, to charge for the service.
- What is the player software?
- The NetTunes player software is required to use the NetTunes service. It is free and is currently available for Windows only. We are working on a Macintosh version and will have it available soon.
- What versions of Windows does the player software run on?
- All versions from Windows 95 through Windows Vista.
- When will NetTunes be out of Beta?
- We don't really know right now, but we will let you know well ahead of time.
- Is my music safe, secure and backed up?
- Yes, yes, and yes.
